Not AI prediction. Physical measurement. The difference between a doctor guessing your diagnosis from a photo and taking an actual blood test.
Why CALIBRE is different
Every card submitted to CALIBRE is measured – not eyeballed, not predicted, not interpreted. Our machine photographs every card front and back, lit from four directions and under UV light, and takes over 800 measurements: every corner at 91 points, every edge, the border on all four sides and the whole surface. Those measurements produce the grade, and the results go in your report. There are no opinions, no mood, no fatigue, no subjective judgement.
Card grading is currently dominated by two approaches. Traditional graders such as PSA, Ace, MGC and Beckett rely on human graders examining cards by eye. A new generation of graders – including SSINT, REX, and several Asian-market services – use machine learning to predict a grade from photographs. Both approaches are forms of judgement, not measurement. The first is human judgement. The second is a model’s prediction based on pattern matching against previously-graded cards.
CALIBRE does neither. CALIBRE measures the card itself – its borders, its corners, its edges and its surface, photographed under light from four directions and under UV – and works out the grade from those measurements. This is the same principle used in medical diagnostics, materials testing, and forensic analysis. Every measurement goes into the grade by fixed rules, and the results are in your report, so you can see why a card got its grade.
How CALIBRE measures a card
Every card goes through the following steps. The measurements produce the grade. Separately, every card is checked by hand for authenticity, under calibrated lighting, before it is graded.
Authenticity – checked by hand
Before a card is graded, a person checks by hand, under calibrated lighting, that it is genuine. Fakes are common and getting better, and a condition grade on a fake is worthless – so this happens on every card. A card that isn’t genuine doesn’t get a grade.
Photometric stereo
The card is photographed under light from four different angles. Combining these images reconstructs a three-dimensional model of the surface, revealing scratches, dents, print defects, and edge wear at microscopic scale.
Border measurement (centering)
The border is measured on all four sides, front and back, to show how evenly the picture sits on the card. Your report gives the split – left to right and top to bottom – as a percentage, where 50/50 is perfect.
Ultraviolet photograph
Each side of the card is also photographed under UV light. It helps show up whitening along the edges that can be hard to see in normal light.
Corner measurement
Every corner, front and back, is measured against the ideal curve for that corner. Any rounding or chipping shows up as a difference from the curve, in millimetres.
Edge check
Every edge, front and back, is checked for dings and whitening.
The same standards for every card
Every measurement is checked against the same standard for every card, and your report shows the measurements behind your grade.
Services and pricing
CALIBRE offers a single grading service at a flat per-card rate – no upcharges based on card value, no holo/non-holo distinction, no hidden fees.
Standard Grading
7-day turnaround. Every measurement above, plus a hand check that the card is genuine. 1–10 grade. Tamper-evident slab with QR-verified certificate number. Full digital report, listed in our public registry. Tracked return post free on every order, every card covered.
Why physical measurement matters
The grading industry has a reproducibility problem. Submitting the same card twice to the same human grader can produce different grades. Submitting it to different graders almost always produces different grades. Machine learning systems, while more consistent than human graders, still produce predictions rather than measurements – their grades depend on how similar the card being graded appears to the cards in their training data, not on the physical condition of the card itself.
Physical measurement takes the guesswork out. A border that is wider on one side is wider by a number you can see. A corner either meets the standard or it doesn’t. These are facts, not opinions.
This has three practical consequences for collectors and sellers:
- Grades are consistent. Every card is measured the same way, against the same standards.
- Grades are transparent. Every grade comes with a detailed digital report showing the measured values behind the decision.
- Every card is checked for authenticity. A person checks it by hand, under calibrated lighting, before it is graded.
Technology
CALIBRE’s measurement system combines high-resolution photographs – lit from four directions, plus a UV photo of each side – and automated measurement into a single process. Components and calibration parameters evolve as the system is refined; this document is a transparent record of what is measured and what evidence is produced, rather than a build sheet for the hardware.
Each graded card carries a tamper-evident slab with a QR-verified certificate number linking to its digital grading report and its entry in our public registry, so anyone can check the grade at any time.
